Hi, I’m Gretchen. I’ve never had an egg.

If you’re going to read about my escapades into the world of food and drink, that seems like a fact I should get out of the way. Errant baked goods and frequent whiskey sours are the closest I’ve ever come to eating one.

I was a picky eater growing up (though today I prefer the term “willful child”). I couldn’t stand the sight, smell, taste, or texture of meats, eggs, or cheese*. By the time I reached high school, I was a full-fledged vegan. This lasted until college, where I transitioned to Vegan Lite™: no meat and as few animal by-products as possible. It turns out I was never really picky. I was merely born with an empathetic palette.

But something else happened when I started college: I heard the siren’s call of liquor and swam into its sweet, burning embrace. Once I stumbled past the glutton phase of learning to drink, I came to appreciate the finer things–like a twelve dollar bottle of sauvignon, as opposed to one that only costs eight.

Granted, the more expensive bottle is just a bigger version of the same brand, but can you fault a girl for being thrifty?

Join me as I pair good, alcohol-based drinks with good, plant-based dishes. I’ll try not to quaff all of the cooking sherry along the way.

*some restrictions apply. Pizza is and ever will be one of my greatest weaknesses.
